If You Are A Writer, You Can Write Anywhere — I Call Bullshit!
Suppose you are reading this sentence right now. In that case, those brilliant folks at MEDIUM are absolutely correct when they say, “Write a catchy headline.” It grabbed you, and here you are. However, I believe the above title, and let me tell you why.

A while ago, I was reading a book on writing, and I came across the statement that if someone is truly a writer, they can write anywhere. I’ll be damned if I can remember who wrote that tripe, and it makes sense. I didn’t buy it.
What I remember is Stephen King’s statement on where to write. He says to find a “refuge.” And I think I’m going to agree with him. He writes about as many books a minute as I have excuses for not planting my ass in the chair and writing. Hell, he wrote the “Dark Tower” series when he experienced writer’s block. That’s 10 fun books! If I do the math correctly, King has had writer’s block only 10 times. Not Fair.

I differ from King about having a “refuge” because I disagree you need a place. Shit, this article is saying that as a writer, being able to write needs a place, not a space. Writing is capturing thought with letters. Thought is of mind. If you didn’t have a brain, you wouldn’t have thought. What if your mind doesn’t have a “refuge?” What if that brain is in the middle of a workday? The office demands you earn a paycheck.

I haven’t been able to write for real for almost ten months. My sister passed from cancer, and her Trust she established has been held captive by a mad Trustee who has just been a nightmare. On top of that, I am still unemployed.
I can close the door to my writer’s room, but I can’t close out my mind. So how I am you supposed to f’n write? So what to do?

I can sit there and deny myself the only thing I want to do in life, and that’s to write. And if one person reads what I write, then I meet the Ray Bradbury definition of a writer, “If one person reads what you have written,” he says, “you are a writer.” So thank you. You’re reading this, and I am what I always wanted to be. And if anybody knew about writing, it’s Bradbury.

If you can’t write because the guy next to is picking his feet in Poughkeepsie, don’t sweat it. You write to capture a thought, and how can you think with Barney next to you choosing his feet.

No. You need that “refuge.” But so does your mind. I need to regain that “refuge,” which begins with finding that place in my thought and attitude. It’s a safe place where troubling thoughts don’t involve feet. And that is what needs to get done with me.
